Grace vs Mercy: What Is the Difference?
In short
Grace and mercy are two sides of God's love. Mercy is God withholding the judgment we deserve; grace is God giving us the good we could never earn. Mercy spares us; grace blesses us. In Jesus we receive both: mercy that forgives our sin, and grace that welcomes us home as God's own children.
What grace means
Grace is God's unearned favor, the gift of kindness, forgiveness, and new life we could never deserve or repay. 'By grace are ye saved through faith.' Grace gives us the good we have not earned and could not achieve on our own.
What mercy means
Mercy is God's compassion toward us in our need and failure, choosing not to give us the punishment our sin deserves. 'His mercies... are new every morning.' Mercy withholds the judgment we do deserve, and treats us with tenderness instead.
How they relate
The two meet at the cross. There God's mercy spared us the judgment for sin, and His grace poured out forgiveness, adoption, and eternal life. Christians across every tradition rejoice in both: undeserved kindness from a God who is rich in mercy and full of grace.
