Bible verse

Matthew 7:12

Matthew 7:12

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”

Matthew 7:12 (King James Version (public domain))

What it means

Jesus gives us a simple compass for every relationship: treat others the way you long to be treated. Instead of keeping score or waiting for people to earn kindness, we take the first step in mercy, honesty, and care. This is the heart of everything God asks. And Jesus does not merely teach it; He lived it perfectly, loving us before we loved Him. As we walk with Him, His Spirit reshapes our instincts until putting others first becomes the natural rhythm of a heart made new.

It is in Matthew, in Matthew 7. Reading the whole chapter shows who is speaking, to whom, and why.

Read it slowly once, then say it back to God in your own words, one phrase at a time. Stop on the phrase that stays with you and stay there. You can also ask the family of God on The Living Bread to pray it with you.

Pray this

Jesus, our Shepherd, nothing about Matthew 7:12 is hidden from you. We bring you Matthew 7:12, love. Teach us to love one another, as you have loved us. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Live this

Three small things you can do this week.

  1. Read all of Matthew 7 today, not only the one verse.
  2. Write Matthew 7:12 where you will see it, and read it aloud at the start and end of the day.
  3. Tell one person what this verse means to you, and ask what verse has carried them.

Where this fits in the walk with Christ

Nothing here is a finish line. It is one door into a life with Christ and with His people.
