The words of Jesus
What Did Jesus Say About Obeying Him?
Jesus tied obedience directly to love. He does not want mere lip service but a life that follows Him, because doing what He says is how love for Him becomes real.
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
Jesus, in John 14:15, King James Version
Obedience is love for Him made visible.
“If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him.”
Jesus, in John 14:23, King James Version
Following His word draws us into the Father's love.
“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”
Jesus, in Luke 6:46, King James Version
Calling Him Lord means little without doing His will.
“he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”
Jesus, in Matthew 7:21, King James Version
Real belonging shows itself in doing God's will.
“blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”
Jesus, in Luke 11:28, King James Version
The blessing is in hearing and then doing.
What Jesus is really saying
For Jesus, obedience is not the opposite of grace but the response to it. He does not demand obedience to earn His love; He invites obedience as the natural fruit of loving Him. To keep His words is not a burden laid on us from outside but a joy that grows from the inside when His love has taken root.
Who these words reveal Him to be
If ye love me, keep my commandments. Jesus assumes the place that belongs to God, giving commandments and binding our love to His word. Only the Lord could ask for such loyalty and promise the Father's love to those who obey. He is not a lawgiver at a distance but the Savior who first loved us and now invites obedience as the fruit of that love. To follow Him is to follow God in the flesh.
Come to Him
Obeying Jesus is not about earning His approval; it flows from knowing His love. Come to Him first, let His love fill you, and you will find yourself wanting to follow the One who gave everything for you.
His words were always meant to lead you to Himself. You can begin with Jesus here, ask someone to pray with you, or read His words in the Bible.
