Bible Verses for the Retirement Years
Retirement can feel like both a reward and a loss: freedom from the daily grind, but also the question of what now gives your days meaning. These verses are for retirement, to open your eyes to a purpose that never retires and a God who is not done using you.
What God says over the retirement years
“They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;”
They shall still bring forth fruit in old age, full of sap and green.
“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.”
Even to your old age and gray hairs, God will carry and deliver you.
“Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.”
Do not forsake me, that I may show Your strength to the next generation.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
You are created for good works God prepared for you to walk in.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
God still has plans for you, for peace and a future and a hope.
“The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.”
The gray head is a crown of glory, found in the way of righteousness.
“That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;”
The older teach the younger by word and example; you have wisdom to give.
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Number your days and gain a heart of wisdom for this season.
“And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.”
Like Caleb, you can still be strong for the work God gives.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Seek first His kingdom, and the rest of your days find their purpose.
Where this all leads
You may retire from a job, but you never retire from your calling to know and serve Jesus. God is not finished with you; some of your most fruitful years, in prayer, in mentoring, in presence, can be ahead. Give these open days to Him, and let your later years shine brighter, pointing others to the Savior who has carried you all along.

A prayer for the retirement years
Lord, thank You for these years and this new season. Show me the purpose You still have for me. Keep me fruitful, and use my time, wisdom, and prayers for Your kingdom. Carry me in my later years, and let my life still point others to You. In Jesus name, amen.
