Bible Verses for Doctors and Physicians

You carry decisions most people never have to make, and you carry them on little sleep. Wisdom, humility, and compassion are not optional in your work; they are the work. These verses are for the physician who needs a steadier source than their own skill.

What God says over doctors

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
Ask God for wisdom in every diagnosis; He gives it freely.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Lean not only on your own understanding; let Him direct your steps.
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”
Every patient is served as unto the Lord, not only unto the chart.
“Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.”
Even the healer needs a Healer; ask Him to heal you too.
“And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.”
Virtue went out of Jesus and healed them all; He is the source of every cure.
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly; the whole of a good physician in one verse.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Carry the weight of hard cases to God, and receive His peace.
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
God heals the broken in heart, the wound your instruments cannot reach.
“For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?”
Whatever gift you have, you received; it keeps you humble and grateful.
“But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.”
Jesus called Himself the physician of the sick; you share His trade.

Where this all leads

Luke, who wrote a Gospel, was a physician. Jesus called Himself a physician too, come for the sick and not the well. Your skill can hold back death for a while; He conquered it. Point your patients, and yourself, to the One who heals both body and soul.

A prayer for doctors

Father, give me wisdom beyond my training and humility beneath my confidence. Steady my hands and my judgment. Let me treat each person as a soul You made and love, not a case to close. Where I cannot cure, make me kind. And heal me too, Lord. In Jesus name, amen.
