Bible Verses for Teachers

You pour yourself into people who may not thank you for years, if ever. You teach on tired days and short budgets, and you carry your students home in your heart. These verses are for the teacher who needs to remember that the work matters more than the world lets on.

What God says over teachers

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
What you plant in a young life takes root for a lifetime.
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
Do not grow weary; the harvest comes in a season you cannot yet see.
“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
Teaching diligently, day by day, is God's own pattern for passing on truth.
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”
The lesson planned at midnight is done heartily as unto the Lord.
“My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.”
The weight you feel is real; teachers carry a holy responsibility, and God honors it.
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
For the strength to begin again each morning, wait on the Lord.
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
You can do this, not by your own reserves, but through Christ.
“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”
The patience and kindness your students need is the love God supplies.
“And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.”
Those who turn many to wisdom shall shine as the stars for ever.
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Let your light shine; your good work points beyond you to the Father.

Where this all leads

Jesus was called Teacher more than any other title. He taught crowds on hillsides and one woman at a well with the same patience. The best of your teaching is a shadow of His. Bring your students, and your own tired heart, to the Teacher who never gives up on a slow learner.

A prayer for teachers

Lord, You are the great Teacher. Give me patience for the hard days and eyes to see the child behind the behavior. Let something I say plant a seed that outlives me. When I am weary, renew me. Use my small classroom for something eternal. In Jesus name, amen.
