A Prayer for Unity in the Church

On the night before He died, Jesus prayed that His people would be one. This is a prayer to echo His heart, for real unity in His church.

Father, Jesus prayed that we would be one, as You are one.

Heal our divisions and soften our pride.

Bind Your church together in love across every line that separates us.

Let the world know we are Yours by how we love one another.

Make us one, for Your glory. Amen.

“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”
John 17:21

You don’t have to pray alone

On The Living Bread you can ask the family of God to pray for you and watch prayers be answered, or pray for someone else who needs it today. It is free, and you are welcome exactly as you are.

Questions people ask

What Scripture is a prayer for unity in the church built on?

It rests on John 17:21. The prayer above is written in plain words around that passage, and the verse is quoted from the stored text, not from memory.

What if I have no words to pray for unity in the church?

Start with the first line of the prayer above and stop there if that is all you can say. God hears the first honest sentence. You can also ask the family of God on The Living Bread to pray with you and for you.

Can I pray this for someone else?

Yes. Change the first person to their name and pray the same lines for them. Praying for others is part of loving one another, and you can ask the family of God to join you.

Pray this

Jesus, our Shepherd, nothing about For Unity is hidden from you. We bring you unity, revival, a friend. Teach us to love one another, as you have loved us. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Live this

Take one step this week.

  1. Pray the lines above once today, out loud if you can, and read John 17:21 in your own Bible.
  2. Tell one trusted person that you are praying about unity, and ask them to pray with you.
  3. Write down one thing you notice this week, so that you can thank God by name when it comes.

Where this fits in the walk with Christ

Nothing here is a finish line. It is one door into a life with Christ and with His people.
