How Do I Know What God Wants Me to Do?
If you are standing at a crossroads asking what God wants you to do, take heart: the question itself is a good and God-given one, and the answer is nearer and kinder than the anxious version of it in your head. God is not hiding His will from you like a prize behind the right guess, waiting for you to fail. He is far more willing to lead than you are afraid of missing the way. But here is the thing to settle first, because it changes everything: knowing God's will is less about decoding a secret and more about trusting a Person. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart, Scripture says, and lean not unto thine own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. That is a relationship, not a riddle.

Let's be honest about this
Let us be honest about the way this usually gets distorted. Many of us have been quietly taught to treat God's will like fortune-telling: if I pray hard enough, or open the Bible to the right verse, or notice the right sign, God will hand me the single correct choice and spare me the risk of deciding. That is not how the Bible describes guidance, and chasing it that way tends to leave people more anxious, not less, reading meaning into license plates and paralyzed at every fork. God does not usually guide by magic. He guides by making us into people who can be trusted with wisdom. The pressure you feel to find the one right answer is often heavier than anything God is actually asking of you.
How God actually guides
So how does God actually make His will known? Overwhelmingly through four ordinary, unglamorous means. First and above all, His Word, which is where He has already spoken clearly about the vast majority of how He wants you to live: honestly, faithfully, humbly, in love. He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good, said the prophet, to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. Second, His character, since He never leads anyone into what contradicts who He is. Third, wise counsel, the trusted, godly voices around you, because in the multitude of counsellers there is safety. And fourth, a heart increasingly surrendered and at peace, willing to do whatever He shows before you even know what it is. Notice what is missing from that list: certainty about the future, and a supernatural voice dictating your address. God usually gives you Himself, His Word, wisdom, and peace, and then trusts you, as a beloved child, to take a faithful step.
Trust the Shepherd himself
Underneath the whole question is a hunger to be led by someone who actually knows the way, and that Someone has a name. Jesus said, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. He did not merely point out a path; He is the path, the good Shepherd who walks ahead and calls His own by name. My sheep hear my voice, He said, and I know them, and they follow me. So the deepest answer to what does God want me to do is, at its root, come to know and trust the Shepherd Himself. When you belong to Him, guidance stops being a frantic search for a hidden map and becomes the steady, unhurried thing it was always meant to be: following the One who loves you and has never once lost His way.

How do I know God's specific plan for a decision the Bible doesn't address?
For most decisions, God has not hidden one secret 'right' choice that you must guess. Where Scripture is silent on the specifics, He gives you His clear commands, wise counsel, sanctified desires, and peace, and then trusts you to choose wisely. Rule out anything that contradicts His Word, seek godly advice, pray honestly, and then take a faithful step. God can steer a moving ship; He is not waiting to punish you for choosing between two good options.
What if I'm afraid of making the wrong choice?
That fear is common and God is gentle with it. But notice the assumption underneath it: that God's love and care hang on you cracking a code. They do not. A man's heart deviseth his way, Scripture says, but the LORD directeth his steps. If your heart is genuinely surrendered to Him, He is more committed to guiding you than you are to being guided. Walk forward humbly and trust Him to correct your course as you go.
Does God speak audibly to tell people what to do?
God can do anything, but Scripture shows this is rare, not the normal pattern. His ordinary way of guiding is through His written Word, His Spirit shaping your heart, wise counsel, and providential circumstances. Beware of treating an inner impression as a divine command on its own; test everything against Scripture. God guides more like a faithful shepherd than a fortune-teller, and His voice always agrees with His written Word.
