How to Find Purpose in Life
You find purpose less by searching harder inside yourself and more by receiving it. The Christian path is to start from being loved by God, then to give that love away in ordinary, concrete acts of service. Purpose is usually discovered in motion, in loving God and people, not by waiting for perfect clarity first.
If the search has worn you out
The modern advice is to look deep inside and find your purpose there, and for many people that only produces anxiety. What if there is nothing special in there? What if you look and come up empty? If that is you, here is a relief: Christianity does not ask you to generate your purpose from scratch. It says purpose is given to you, and then grown.
A different starting point
Instead of ‘look inside and find yourself,’ the Bible says: you are made, on purpose, for good.
That flips the search around. You do not have to invent your worth or manufacture meaning. You receive it, and then you walk in the good works God has for you, which usually turn out to be near at hand: the needs in front of you, the people you already have, the work already on your desk. Seek God first, and purpose tends to find you along the way.
this week, stop asking ‘what is my grand purpose’ and ask instead ‘who around me needs love, and what can I actually do about it?’ Then do that. Repeat.
