How to Hear God's Voice
Wanting to hear God's voice is a good longing, but it helps to know what the Bible actually means by it, because a wrong expectation can leave you either chasing feelings or convinced God is silent. When Jesus said, my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me, He was describing a real, personal relationship in which His people learn to recognize and follow Him. That recognition grows mostly not through dramatic audible words but through knowing Him well, the way you know the voice of someone you love. Hearing God is less about a supernatural sound and more about a shepherded life.

Let's be honest about this
Let us be honest and careful here, because this is where sincere people go astray. It is dangerously easy to mistake your own strong feelings, wishes, or fears for the voice of God, and history and daily life are full of harm done by people certain that God told them something He never said. So Scripture gives us a safeguard: God's voice never contradicts God's Word. Prove all things, it says; hold fast that which is good. Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God. An impression that leads you to disobey Scripture, harm someone, act in pride, or bypass wisdom is not the Shepherd's voice, no matter how spiritual it feels. Humility about your own inner impressions is not weak faith; it is exactly the discernment the Bible calls for.
How God actually guides
So how does God ordinarily speak? First and foremost through the Scriptures, which are His clearest and most reliable voice, living and active, able to make you wise. Read them not merely for information but listening, expecting the Spirit to apply them to your life. Second, through the inward work of the Holy Spirit, who guides Christ's people into truth, brings Scripture to mind, convicts, comforts, and stirs desires, always in harmony with the written Word. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, Jesus promised, he will guide you into all truth. Third, through the counsel of other believers and the circumstances God arranges. Elijah learned that God was not in the wind or the earthquake or the fire, but in a still small voice. Hearing God usually requires the same thing Elijah needed: quiet, attentiveness, and a heart already committed to obey. If you want to hear God, get near His Word, get still, and be willing to do what He says before He says it.
Trust the Shepherd himself
The clearest and fullest thing God has ever said is not a whisper in your feelings but a Person: God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son. If you want to hear God, look and listen to Jesus, in the Gospels, in the whole of Scripture that points to Him, in the Spirit He gives. And here is the comfort for anyone afraid they are not spiritual enough to hear: the Shepherd takes responsibility for being heard by His own. My sheep hear my voice, He said, a promise, not a pressure. Come to know Him, and you will learn His voice the way you learn the voice of someone you love, over time, in trust.

How do I know if it's God speaking or just my own thoughts?
Test it. God's voice never contradicts His written Word, so measure every impression against Scripture. Ask whether it leads toward Christlike character, humility, love, and obedience, or toward pride, harm, or disobedience. Seek the counsel of mature believers, and do not act on an inner nudge as if it were a divine command on its own. When something is truly from God, it will align with His Word, bear good fruit, and hold up under wise counsel and time.
Why does God feel silent when I'm listening for Him?
Sometimes we are listening for a dramatic voice while God is speaking steadily through His Word that we have not opened, or through counsel we have not sought. Sometimes silence is an invitation to trust and to wait rather than a sign of absence. And often God has already spoken clearly on the matter through Scripture and is waiting for obedience, not more information. Draw near through His Word, get quiet, keep obeying what you already know, and trust that the Shepherd has not abandoned His sheep.
Does God still speak audibly today?
God can do whatever He wills, but Scripture shows audible speech was always rare, even in biblical times. His normal, reliable way of speaking is through the Scriptures and the inward work of His Spirit, confirmed by wise counsel and circumstances. Rather than straining for a voice in your head, give your attention to the voice He has already given in His Word, where you can be sure it is truly Him.
