Let's be honest about this
Let us set aside two distortions. One imagines God's plan as a detailed, hidden blueprint, every job, house, and relationship predetermined, so that you live in dread of missing a turn and wrecking it. That picture is not the God of the Bible, and it produces fear rather than the peace He promises. The other distortion swings the opposite way: since God has a plan, I can be passive, make no effort, and wait for it to unfold on its own. Scripture commends neither the anxious code-cracker nor the passive spectator. It presents a God who has good and certain purposes for His children and who works those purposes through their active, faithful, ordinary obedience.
How God actually guides
What does the Bible actually promise about God's plan for you? First, that if you belong to Him, you were known and loved before you existed, thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written. Your life is not an accident. Second, that God's central purpose is to conform you to Christ and to weave everything, even your pain and mistakes, toward good: all things work together for good to them that love God. Third, that He has real good works prepared for you to do: for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Notice how that works, His plan is not a secret you must decode but a life you get to walk into by doing the good that is in front of you today. You participate in God's plan less by figuring out the future and more by faithfully loving God and people now, and trusting Him with the shape of the whole.
Trust the Shepherd himself
The surest evidence that God has good plans for you is Jesus. God did not stay distant, watching to see if you would find your way; He came in Christ to seek and to save, to bring you into His family and secure your future forever. In Him, the deepest question, does my life matter to God, is answered at the cross, where He gave His Son for you. So whatever the details of your road, the plan of God at its heart is this: to make you His own, to walk with you as your Shepherd, and to bring you home. You do not have to earn a place in His purpose or fear falling out of it. You are invited to trust the One whose thoughts toward you are peace.
