What Is Spiritual Discernment?
Spiritual discernment is the ability, given and grown by God, to tell good from evil, wisdom from folly, and truth from counterfeit, especially in the gray areas where no rule spells out the answer. Far from being a mystical sixth sense reserved for a spiritual elite, the Bible describes it as a maturity that ordinary believers develop over time. Strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, Scripture says, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Discernment is trained, like a skill, through practice, and it is exactly what you need when guidance is not obvious.

Let's be honest about this
Let us clear away a misunderstanding. Many people imagine discernment as a supernatural hunch, a gut feeling they should simply trust as the voice of God. But feelings and hunches, however strong, are not the same as discernment, and treating them that way has led many astray. Biblical discernment is not less thoughtful than ordinary wisdom; it is wisdom deepened and directed by God's Word and Spirit. It engages the mind, not bypasses it. Nor is discernment about becoming suspicious and harsh, quick to judge everyone and everything. True discernment is marked by love; it grows precisely so that our love may be intelligent and our choices excellent, not so that we may condemn.
How God actually guides
How is discernment developed? First, through immersion in Scripture, because you cannot recognize the counterfeit if you do not deeply know the genuine. A mind soaked in God's Word gains an instinct for what fits His character and what does not. Second, through the renewing of the mind that the Spirit works: be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Notice that proving, or discerning, God's will follows a mind being reshaped. Third, through practice, actually making decisions, weighing them before God, and learning from the outcomes, so that your senses are exercised over time. Fourth, through prayer, especially the prayer Paul models: that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; that ye may approve things that are excellent. Discernment, then, is not a shortcut around wisdom but the maturing of a whole life, Word, Spirit, prayer, practice, and love, into people who can be trusted to choose well when the path is not spelled out.
Trust the Shepherd himself
At its heart, discernment is not a technique to master but a fruit of knowing Christ. The more you know Jesus, His Word, His character, His ways, the more surely you recognize what is and is not of Him, the way familiarity with a friend lets you spot an impersonation. In Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and He gives wisdom generously to those who ask. So the path to discernment runs straight through relationship with Christ: abiding in Him, feeding on His Word, walking in His Spirit. You do not become discerning by acquiring a spiritual trick; you become discerning by becoming, over time, more like the Shepherd whose voice you are learning to know.
