Does God Still Speak Today?
Does God still speak, or did He fall silent long ago? If you have wondered this, you are not faithless; you are honest. The Bible's answer is yes, God still speaks, but perhaps not in the way you have been picturing. God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son. His fullest, clearest word to the world is Jesus, and through the Scriptures and His Spirit He continues to speak to His people today. The question is less whether God speaks and more whether we are listening where He actually speaks.

Let's be honest about this
Let us be honest about two opposite mistakes. One is to assume God has gone quiet, that the living voice in Scripture belongs only to the past, and so to stop expecting Him to lead at all. The other is to treat every passing feeling and desire as a fresh word from God, which quickly leads people into confusion and even harm. The Bible steers between both. It insists that God still guides His people, and it insists just as firmly that His guidance must be tested. Prove all things, it says; hold fast that which is good. Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God. God speaks, and God gives us the means to be sure it is really Him.
How God actually guides
Where, then, does God speak today? Primarily and most reliably in the Scriptures, which are not a dead record but living words through which the Spirit addresses us now. When you read the Bible prayerfully, God is speaking; this is the surest place to hear Him. Alongside His Word, God speaks by His Spirit within His people, guiding, convicting, comforting, and stirring desires that always agree with what He has already written. When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, Jesus said, he will guide you into all truth. He also speaks through the wise counsel of other believers and through the circumstances He providentially arranges. What He does not ordinarily do is bypass His Word with private messages that carry Scripture's authority. So the way to hear God today is not to wait for a mystical event but to open the Book He has already filled with His voice, listen with a heart ready to obey, and test every impression against it.
Trust the Shepherd himself
The deepest answer to does God still speak is a Person, not a technique. In Jesus, God has spoken His final and clearest word, and Jesus is not silent now. He is the living Shepherd who said, my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. To hear God today is, at heart, to come to Christ, to read the Scriptures that reveal Him, to receive His Spirit, and to learn the sound of His voice by walking with Him. If you feel God has been silent, the invitation is not to strain harder for a whisper but to draw near to the One who has already spoken so much and so lovingly, and who has promised that His own will hear Him.

If God still speaks, why don't I hear anything?
Often because we are listening in the wrong place or for the wrong thing. God's surest voice is the Scriptures, and many who feel He is silent have not been reading and listening there. He also speaks through His Spirit and through wise counsel, usually as steady clarity rather than dramatic sound. Draw near through His Word with a heart ready to obey, and you will find He has been speaking all along.
How is hearing God today different from the prophets in the Bible?
In Scripture, direct prophetic revelation was rare and given for specific purposes, and it has now reached its fullness in Christ and the completed Scriptures. Today God speaks most reliably through that finished Word, applied to our lives by His Spirit, rather than through new revelations that carry the Bible's authority. This is not a lesser way of hearing; it is a surer one, because it is anchored in what we can test and trust.
Can I trust an inner impression as God speaking to me?
Treat inner impressions with humble caution rather than automatic certainty. God's Spirit does move within His people, but our own emotions and desires are easily mistaken for His voice. Test every impression against Scripture, weigh it with wise counsel, and watch for good fruit over time. If it contradicts God's Word or leads away from love and humility, it is not from Him, however strong it feels.
