There is a way home

I haven't been to church in years

If you have not been to church in years, God has not been keeping a tally waiting to hold it against you. The years away do not disqualify you or make your return awkward to him. Whenever you turn back, however long it has been, you are welcome.

Life carried you away, one skipped Sunday at a time, until years had passed and it felt too late to go back without explaining yourself. Maybe you assume you would have to account for the absence, or that you have missed too much, or that everyone has moved on and there is no place left for you.

What is true

God's welcome does not have a statute of limitations. The father in Jesus' story did not interrogate his son about the wasted years; he ran and embraced him. Coming back to God is not the same as fixing your church attendance, and it certainly does not require walking back into a place that once hurt you. It starts, quietly, between you and God, wherever you are. If gathered community becomes part of it later, that can be a safe and gentle step, in its own time.

Your one small step: reconnect with God first, privately, before you think about any building. One honest prayer today matters more than years of attendance. The rest can wait.
