Why does God feel so far away?

Many things can dull the felt sense of God: grief, exhaustion, depression, busyness, or simply a dry season of faith. Felt distance is not the same as real abandonment.

Did I do something to make God leave?

God's promise is that he will not leave you. Even when we fail, he does not withdraw. The distance you feel is not a punishment he is inflicting.

What do I do when God is silent?

Keep coming, honestly, even without feeling. Read the Psalms, which are full of people in the silence. Often God is nearer in the dark than our feelings can tell.

There is a way home

I feel far from God

Feeling far from God is not the same as being far from God. Distance can be felt in the middle of his nearness. The silence you are hearing is real to you, and painful, but it is not proof that he has left. Feelings are weather, not the sky.

You pray and it feels like the words hit the ceiling. The warmth you used to feel is gone. You wonder if you did something to drive him off, or if he was ever really there. The silence can feel like abandonment, and the fear that you have been forgotten is heavy to carry alone.

What is true

Even Jesus, on the cross, cried out my God, why hast thou forsaken me. The felt absence of God is not foreign to faith; it runs right through the middle of it. Some of the deepest believers have walked long stretches of silence and found, looking back, that God had been carrying them the whole time. His promise was never that you would always feel him near. It was that he would never leave you. That promise holds when the feeling is gone.

Matthew 27:46

“And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not.”

“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? ... if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.”

Psalm 139:7-8

One small step

Your one small step: keep showing up to God even without the feeling. Pray the plain, dry prayer anyway. Faithfulness in the silence is not less real than worship in the warmth.
