How to Pray: a simple guide

Prayer is simply talking with God, honestly, in your own words. You don't need special language or a perfect life. Here is a gentle place to begin.

Many people want to pray but feel they don't know how. The good news: God is not looking for eloquence. He is looking for you. Prayer is a conversation with a Father who already loves you.

Just begin

Start by simply telling God where you are, glad, tired, afraid, unsure. He can handle all of it.

Give thanks

Name a few things you're grateful for. Thankfulness turns the heart toward God.

Ask honestly

Bring your real needs and the people you love. 'Let your requests be made known unto God.'

Listen

Sit quietly for a moment. Prayer is not only speaking; it's making space to be with God.

Pray with others

You were not meant to pray alone. Sharing prayer with others multiplies its strength.

“When thou prayest... pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

Matthew 6:6 · King James Version (public domain)
