How to Fast as a Christian

Fasting, going without food or something else for a time to seek God, is a quiet, powerful practice. Here's a gentle way to begin.

Fasting is not about earning God's favor or punishing yourself. It's about creating hunger for God, turning down the volume of the world to hear Him more clearly.

Start small

You don't have to begin with days. Try one meal, or a single day, and give that time to prayer.

Give the hunger to God

When you feel the craving, let it turn your heart to God in prayer.

Pair it with prayer and Scripture

Fasting without seeking God is just skipping a meal. Fill the space with Him.

Do it quietly

Jesus said to fast privately, not for others to see.

Be wise and gentle

If you have health conditions, fast from something other than food, and seek guidance. God looks at the heart.

“But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father.”
