There is a way home

Coming back to God

Coming back to God is less a program and more a turning: you face toward him again, honestly, and discover he was already facing you. It does not require a perfect prayer or a fixed life. It requires only that you come, and he does the rest.

You are ready, or nearly ready, to come back, but you keep wanting to make sure you are doing it right. Is there a prayer to say, a checklist, a feeling you are supposed to have first. The uncertainty makes you hesitate on the doorstep of your own homecoming, unsure whether you are truly welcome or just presuming.

What is true

Coming back to God rests on what he has done, not on your technique. Jesus opened the way home once and for all, so returning is not about assembling enough goodness to qualify. It is about trusting that the door is open and walking through it. You will not do it perfectly, and you do not need to. God meets the honest, stumbling return with the same running welcome he gave the son who came home rehearsing an apology he never got to finish.

What Jesus said, and did

“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22-23
“As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye.”
Ezekiel 33:11
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

One small step

Your one small step: stop trying to do it right and simply come. Tell God, in whatever words you have, I am coming back. That honest turning is all that coming back requires to begin.

If you want to pray

God, I am coming back, and I am not sure I am doing it right. Thank you that it does not depend on my getting the words perfect, only on your open door. Here I am. Amen.

Honest questions

What does coming back to God actually mean?
It means turning toward him again in trust, honestly, as you are. It rests on what Jesus has done to open the way, not on your performance.
Is there a right way to come back to God?
There is no formula to get right. An honest turning of the heart is what matters. God meets stumbling, imperfect returns with a generous welcome.
What if I come back and drift again?
Then you come back again. God's mercies are described as new every morning. Returning is not a one-time gate but an open door you can walk through as often as you need.

There is no rush

You do not have to decide anything today. You can read a little, close the page, and come back tomorrow, or never. Nobody here is keeping score, and you owe no one an answer. When you are ready, and only then, the gentlest place to meet Jesus is in his own words, watching how he treats the tired, the ashamed, and the ones everybody else gave up on.
