What Is the Holy Spirit? (Plain and Simple)
The Holy Spirit is God himself present and at work in the world and inside those who trust Jesus. Not a force, not an it, but a Person, the third Person of the one God, along with the Father and the Son. When Jesus returned to the Father, he promised he would not leave his followers alone but would send the Spirit to be with them and in them forever. Jesus called him the Spirit of truth, saying, when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. The Holy Spirit is how God, who once walked among us in Jesus, now lives within his people, comforting, guiding, changing, and empowering them from the inside.

Here is the plain version. Christians believe in one God who exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is fully God, just as the Father and the Son are. What does the Spirit do? He comes to live inside a person the moment they trust Jesus, making God's presence real and personal. He comforts you in sorrow, which is why Jesus called him the Comforter. He teaches and reminds you of the truth. He gently convicts you of what is wrong, not to shame you but to lead you home. He gives you power to live a new kind of life you could not manage on your own. And he slowly grows real change in you, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness. Ye shall receive power, Jesus told his followers, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.
A little deeper
It helps to see how the three Persons work together in the one rescue. The Father plans and sends out of love. The Son, Jesus, comes and accomplishes the rescue by his life, death, and resurrection. The Holy Spirit applies that rescue to you, making it personal, bringing the far-off love of God right into your own heart. This is why the Christian life is not you gritting your teeth to be good. It is God himself living in you and changing you from within. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead, the Bible says, dwells in those who belong to him. That is an astonishing claim: the very power that emptied Jesus' tomb takes up residence in ordinary people to bring them to life. You are not asked to change yourself and then earn God. God moves in, and the changing is his work, worked out with you over a lifetime.

The Holy Spirit never draws attention to himself; his great delight is to point you to Jesus and make Christ real to you. He takes what belongs to Jesus, his words, his love, his salvation, and makes them yours. So if you find yourself drawn to Christ, curious, softened, longing, that pull is not random; it is the gentle work of the Spirit himself, bringing you home to the Son. To receive Jesus is to receive the Spirit, and to be filled with the very life of God.

Is the Holy Spirit a person or a force?
A person, not an impersonal force. The Bible describes the Spirit doing personal things: teaching, comforting, guiding, and being grieved. He is God himself, the third Person of the Trinity, as fully God as the Father and the Son. He can be known and related to, not just used or tapped into.
How do I receive the Holy Spirit?
You receive the Spirit when you turn to Jesus in faith; he comes to live in everyone who genuinely trusts Christ. It is a gift, not a reward for spiritual achievement. You do not have to feel a certain way. You come to Jesus, and the Spirit comes with him to make his home in you.
What does the Holy Spirit do in daily life?
