Who Is God? (For a Total Beginner)
In Christianity, God is the one eternal Being who made everything that exists, who has always been and will always be, and who is personal, good, and loving rather than a distant force or an impersonal energy. God is not part of the universe; he is the One who made the universe out of nothing (In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth). And the most important thing Christians say about him is not that he is powerful or all-knowing, though he is, but that in his very heart he is love. God is love, the Bible says plainly. He made you on purpose, he knows you completely, and he wants to be known by you.

Here are the simple things to know. God is one, not many. God is the Creator, so everything you see, including you, comes from him and depends on him. A little deeper
Christians also believe something distinctive and beautiful about God: that the one God eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is not three gods, and it is not one God wearing three masks. It is one God who has always been a relationship of love within himself. That may stretch your mind, and that is fine; it is meant to be treasured, not fully mastered. But it tells you something crucial: love did not begin when God made the world. God was already love, Father and Son delighting in one another by the Spirit, before anything else existed. So when the Bible says God is love, it means love is not just something God does; it is who God is. He did not make you because he was lonely or needy. He made you out of the overflow of a joy he already had, to share it with you.

If you want to know what God is like, do not start with abstract ideas; look at Jesus. Christians believe Jesus is God the Son become human, so that in him the invisible God became visible. When you watch Jesus welcome outcasts, weep at a grave, touch the sick, and forgive his own executioners, you are watching the heart of God in action. Whoever has seen me, Jesus said, has seen the Father. So the answer to who is God is not finally a definition. It is a face, and the face is kind.

If God is loving, why is there so much suffering?
This is one of the hardest and most honest questions, and Christianity does not answer it with a cold formula. It says God is not distant from our pain; in Jesus he entered it, suffered, and died, and he promises finally to end all suffering. He does not merely explain pain from a distance; he came into it to defeat it.
How can God be three and one at the same time?
Christians call this the Trinity: one God who eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is a mystery held in wonder, not a contradiction. God is one in being and three in persons. You do not need to fully understand it to begin knowing God, any more than you need to understand light to enjoy the sun.
Can I actually know God, or just know about him?
