What Is Faith? (Simple Definition)
Faith, in Christianity, does not mean believing things without reason or pretending to be certain when you are not. It means trust: leaning your whole self on God because you have good reason to think he is trustworthy. The Bible gives a working definition: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith is confidence in what you cannot yet see, grounded in the character of the One you are trusting. It is less like guessing and more like a child stepping off a wall into a parent's arms. You do not need perfect certainty or all your questions answered. You need only enough trust to take the next step toward Jesus, and even that trust is something God helps you find.

Here is a plain way to see it. You already live by faith every day: you trust a chair to hold you, a doctor you cannot fully evaluate, a bridge you did not build. Faith is not the absence of evidence; it is trust that acts on good grounds. Christian faith works the same way. It looks at who Jesus is, what he did, and above all that he rose from the dead, and it decides to trust him with real life. Faith is not mainly a feeling; it is a direction of the heart. It is turning from trusting yourself to save yourself, and instead relying on Jesus. Faith and doubt are not opposites in the way people assume; the real opposite of faith is not doubt but unbelief that refuses to trust at all. Honest doubt can live right alongside genuine faith, and Christianity has room for it. A man in the Gospels once cried out to Jesus, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief, and Jesus helped him. That is the honest prayer of most believers, most days. Faith also grows. It usually starts small, a mustard seed, Jesus said, and it strengthens as you act on it and find God faithful. So do not wait to have flawless certainty before you begin; that day may never come for anyone. Faith is a step taken in the direction of the trustworthy, and each step gives you more ground to stand on. And Scripture says faith comes by hearing, meaning it grows as you keep encountering who Jesus is, especially in his own words.

Faith is only ever as good as its object, and here Christianity's whole confidence rests: the object of faith is Jesus, who proved trustworthy by rising from the dead. You are not asked to believe in believing, or to work up a feeling. You are asked to trust a Person who has shown, at the cost of his own life, that he can be trusted with yours. Blessed are they, Jesus said, that have not seen, and yet have believed. You can begin to trust him today, exactly as you are, doubts and all.

Is faith just believing without evidence?
No. Christian faith is trust grounded in reasons: the life, death, and especially the resurrection of Jesus, attested by witnesses who died rather than recant. Faith goes beyond what can be proven like a math problem, as all trust does, but it is not a leap into the dark. It is a step toward the trustworthy.
What if I have doubts?
Doubts are normal and are not the enemy of faith; refusing to trust at all is. Many of the strongest believers wrestle honestly with questions. You can bring your doubts to God directly, as people in the Bible did, and ask him to help your unbelief. Faith often grows through honest wrestling, not around it.
How much faith do I need to become a Christian?
Not a lot, and not perfect faith. Jesus said faith as small as a mustard seed is enough, because what saves you is not the size of your faith but the greatness of the One you place it in. A little real trust in Jesus is enough to begin. He meets people who come with only a flicker of it.
