A Friend of God: Who You Are in Christ. A single white lamb in a vast emerald valley beneath golden clouds.

An identity Scripture gives you

A Friend of God

John 15:15

Jesus does more than save His people; He calls them friends and brings them into His confidence. This is astonishing intimacy offered by the Lord to those who follow Him.

“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”John 15:15

What Scripture says you are

What Scripture says you are. On the night before He died, Jesus told His disciples, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends... Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you" (John 15:13-15). A servant obeys without being told the master's mind; a friend is let in on it. Jesus is not lowering the seriousness of following Him; He still calls Himself Lord (John 15:14, "ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you"). But He adds friendship to lordship. He shares His Father's heart with those He loves. Scripture had already used this remarkable title once: Abraham "was called the Friend of God" (James 2:23), because he believed God and walked with Him. So to be a friend of God is to be brought near, spoken to, trusted with His purposes, and loved to the point of His own life laid down. It is not casual buddiness; it is covenant nearness with the King.

What it means for you

What it means for you. If Jesus calls you His friend, then your relationship with God is not merely transactional. You are not simply a worker turning in tasks; you are welcomed into His counsel through His word, where He has made His Father's heart known. This changes how you pray and read Scripture; you are listening to a Friend who has chosen to open His mind to you. It also raises the dignity and the responsibility of obedience. Jesus ties friendship to doing what He commands, not because love is earned by performance, but because a true friend of Christ shares His desires. Do not sentimentalize this into a tame companion who exists to serve your preferences. He remains Lord, and His friendship often calls you to costly love, as His friendship cost Him everything. But when you feel like a hired hand grinding through duties, remember that the One you serve has called you friend and laid down His life to prove it.

Why it is true only in Christ

Why it is true only in Christ. Friendship with God is not the natural condition of humanity. Scripture describes the unconverted mind as "enmity against God" (Romans 8:7), and James warns that "the friendship of the world is enmity with God" (James 4:4). We were not neutral acquaintances but estranged. The friendship Jesus offers is possible only because He first made peace by laying down His life: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." He turned enemies into friends by His own blood, for "when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son" (Romans 5:10). So this nearness is not a status everyone holds; it belongs to those Christ has drawn to Himself and reconciled. Abraham was the friend of God through faith, and so are all who believe in Jesus. Outside of Christ there is estrangement; in Him there is a friendship purchased at the cross.

The Lord of glory calls His followers friends and holds nothing back that the Father has given Him to share. Sit with the wonder that God wants your nearness, not merely your labor.

Questions people ask

Isn't calling God my friend too familiar or irreverent?

It would be, if we invented the title. But Jesus Himself said, "I have called you friends," and Scripture calls Abraham the friend of God. The reverence is preserved because He remains Lord even as He grants friendship. It is not that we have reduced God to our level; it is that He has graciously drawn us near at great cost.

What if I feel more like a distant servant than a friend?

Jesus spoke the word "friend" to disciples who would soon fail Him, so the title does not depend on your steady feelings. When you feel distant, return to His word, where He has made His Father known to you, and to prayer, where a friend is heard. The friendship rests on His choice of you (John 15:16), not your emotional nearness on a given day.

Does friendship with God mean He always agrees with me?

No. A true friend is honest, and God's friendship includes His correction and His call to obey Him. He shares His heart with you and also shapes yours toward His. Friendship with Christ is not Him endorsing your wishes; it is Him drawing you into His purposes.
