A Child of God
To those who receive Jesus, God gives the right to be called His children, not as a figure of speech but as a real change of family. It is one of the most staggering claims in all of Scripture.

What Scripture says you are. John writes, "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name" (John 1:12). This is not something people possess by natural birth; the next verse says they are born "not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God" (John 1:13). John cannot get over it: "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God" (1 John 3:1). Paul explains the mechanism as adoption: "ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15). Adoption is a legal and relational act. God does not merely forgive believers as a judge might release a prisoner; He takes them into His own household as sons and daughters with full standing. "Abba" is the intimate, trusting word a child uses for a father. So being a child of God means you are not a servant hoping to be tolerated but a child brought near, given the Spirit who teaches your heart to call God Father.

What it means for you. If God is truly your Father, then you can come to Him. You do not have to earn an audience or approach as a stranger. You can bring Him your fears, your needs, your failures, and your ordinary days. It also means He disciplines you as a father does, "for whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth" (Hebrews 12:6); His correction is a sign of sonship, not rejection. Being a child of God gives you an unshakable identity when the world's labels fail. You may be poor, unnoticed, or struggling, and still it is written that you are His. Do not twist this into a claim on comfort or wealth; children of God in Scripture often suffered, yet were never orphaned. And do not use it to excuse sin, for John adds that God's children are marked by growing likeness to their Father. The tenderness of the relationship and the seriousness of it belong together.

Why it is true only in Christ. Scripture does not teach that everyone is automatically a child of God. Jesus once told religious men, "Ye are of your father the devil" (John 8:44), a sober reminder that spiritual sonship is not universal. Adoption comes only through the Son. "God sent forth his Son... to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons" (Galatians 4:4-5). The right to be called children is given to those who "received him" and "believe on his name" (John 1:12). Jesus is the true and eternal Son by nature; believers become sons and daughters by grace, brought into the family He has always belonged to, at the cost of His own life. So this identity is not a birthright of humanity in general; it is the gift of belonging to Christ. Outside of Him no one can rightly call God Father in this saving sense, but all who come to Him through Jesus are received.

What if I do not feel like God's child?
Adoption is a fact accomplished by God, not a feeling you sustain. A child who feels distant is still legally and truly a child. Romans 8 says the Spirit Himself witnesses that you are God's child; ask Him to steady your assurance, and lean on the written promise rather than the changing weather of your heart.
Aren't we all children of God already?
In the sense that God made everyone, all people are His creatures and bear His image. But the New Testament reserves the language of adopted sons and daughters for those who receive Christ (John 1:12). It is a relationship entered by faith, not a status everyone already holds apart from Jesus.
Does being His child mean life will go well for me?
It means you are never abandoned, not that you are spared hardship. Many of God's children in Scripture suffered greatly yet were kept by their Father. His discipline and His comfort are both expressions of real fatherly love, and your final inheritance is secure even when this life is hard.
