Bible Verses for Pastors

You carry sermons, crises, criticism, and the souls of a whole congregation, often while your own soul runs dry. Ministry is a joy and a weight. These verses are for the pastor who pours out for everyone and needs someone to pour into them.

What God says over pastors

“Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.”
Feed the flock of God willingly; the Chief Shepherd will reward you.
“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”
Preach the word; be ready in season and out; this is your charge.
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
When ministry drains you, waiting on the Lord renews your strength.
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
Do not grow weary in well doing; the harvest comes in due season.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
The shepherd who cares for the weary is invited to rest in Christ.
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
His grace is sufficient; His strength is perfected in your weakness.
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Be strong and courageous; the Lord your God is with you.
“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
Take heed to yourself and the flock the Holy Ghost made you overseer of.
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
Even the shepherd needs the Shepherd to restore his soul.
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
Your labour in the Lord is not in vain; be steadfast.

Where this all leads

You point people to Jesus every week; do not forget to come to Him yourself. He is the Chief Shepherd, the One who laid His life down for the sheep, and He tends the shepherd too. When the well is dry, come to the Living Water. He restores the soul of the one who restores others.

A prayer for pastors

Lord, You called me to shepherd Your people. Fill me before You send me out. Guard my heart from discouragement, pride, and burnout. Give me Your words to preach and Your love for hard people. Restore my soul, Chief Shepherd, and keep me faithful. In Jesus name, amen.

What is a good Bible verse for a pastor?
1 Peter 5:2-4, which calls pastors to shepherd God's flock and promises the crown of glory from the Chief Shepherd, and 2 Timothy 4:2, 'Preach the word,' are cornerstone verses for ministry.
How can a pastor avoid burnout biblically?
By coming to Jesus for rest (Matthew 11:28), leaning on sufficient grace in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9), and letting the Shepherd restore their own soul (Psalm 23) rather than ministering only from their own reserves.
