Being far from home, whether at school, on deployment, in a new city, or a new country, can leave a real ache in the chest. You miss the familiar, the people, the belonging. These verses are for homesickness, to comfort the longing and remind you that God is your truest home, wherever you are.
What God says over homesickness
“Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.”
The Lord goes before you and will be with you; do not fear.
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Be strong and courageous; God is with you wherever you go.
“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.”
Wherever you go, His hand leads you and holds you.
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
From the end of the earth I will cry to You when my heart is faint.
“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
He has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.
“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Your true citizenship is in heaven; your deepest home is with Him.
Where this all leads
The ache for home is, underneath it all, an ache for a home nothing on earth fully satisfies. Jesus is preparing a place where you will finally, fully belong, and until then He is with you wherever you are, so you are never truly far from home. Wherever you wake tomorrow, the God who is your dwelling place is already there.
Lord, I miss home and the people I love, and my heart aches with the distance. Be my home wherever I am. Comfort the longing, and remind me You are always with me. Thank You for the true home You are preparing, where I will never be far away again. In Jesus name, amen.
You were never meant to walk this alone
The family here will pray with you, and you can hear how Christ has met others in the same place.
Psalm 90:1 (God as our dwelling place), Deuteronomy 31:8, and Matthew 28:20 (Jesus is with us always) comfort the homesick, along with Psalm 139:7-10.
What does the Bible say about missing home?
It reminds us God Himself is our dwelling place (Psalm 90:1), He is with us wherever we go (Psalm 139, Matthew 28:20), and our truest home is with Him, a place Jesus is preparing (John 14:2-3).
