You sit with people in their darkest moments and carry stories that would sink most people. It is meaningful work, and it is heavy. These verses are for counselors and therapists who pour out wisdom and compassion, and who need refilling and boundaries of their own.
What God says over counselors
“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”
If you lack wisdom, ask God, who gives to all liberally.
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”
The God of comfort comforts you, so you can comfort others.
“The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.”
Come to Jesus when you are weary from carrying others.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Take the weight you carry home to God, and receive His peace.
Where this all leads
You help carry burdens, but you cannot ultimately heal a heart; only God can. Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor, and He is the One who mends what is broken in the people you serve, and in you. Pour out from His fullness rather than your own, take your own weariness to Him, and let Him be the Comforter behind your comfort.
Lord, You are the Wonderful Counselor. Give me wisdom and words for the weary. Help me carry others without being crushed, and set the boundaries I need. Comfort me as I comfort them, and point them to You, the true Healer. Refill me daily. In Jesus name, amen.
You were never meant to walk this alone
The family here will pray with you, and you can hear how Christ has met others in the same place.
Galatians 6:2 (bear one another's burdens), Isaiah 50:4 (a word to the weary), and James 1:5 (ask God for wisdom) speak to counselors and therapists.
Who is the Wonderful Counselor in the Bible?
Isaiah 9:6 gives Jesus the title 'Wonderful, Counsellor.' He is the ultimate source of wisdom and healing, the One every human counselor points toward.
