You are more than a strategist; you are a mentor, a father or mother figure, a shaper of character for the athletes in your care. Wins matter, but people matter more. These verses are for coaches who want to lead well and leave a mark that outlasts the scoreboard.
What God says over coaches
“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.”
“Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”
Do not grow weary in the slow work of building people up.
“But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.”
Model diligence and study; give your best and be unashamed.
Where this all leads
The best coaches build people, not just players, and that is exactly what Jesus did, taking ordinary people and shaping them for a lifetime. Your influence goes far beyond the game. Coach as one who serves, model faith and character, and point your athletes to the One who gives a strength and a prize that no season can take away.
Lord, thank You for the athletes in my care. Help me build not just their skill but their character. Give me patience, wisdom, and integrity. Let me be an example worth following and point them to You. Let my influence outlast any scoreboard. In Jesus name, amen.
