The Wells of the Bible: The Long Thirst That Ends in Living Water

In a dry land, a well was life, and the Bible knows it. Its great stories keep happening at wells. Hagar finds one in the desert and names the God who sees. A servant prays and Rebekah appears with her jar. Jacob rolls the stone away for Rachel. Moses, a fugitive, defends the daughters of Midian at a well. And underneath them all runs a claim God makes about Himself: I am the fountain of living water, and my people have traded me for broken cisterns that hold none. The whole thirst of Scripture pools at one noon in Samaria, where a tired traveler offers a woman a spring that never runs dry, and it ends at a river from the throne, free to anyone who is thirsty.
