You are not too far gone
Overcoming Alcohol Addiction
If drinking has stopped being a choice and started being a need, you already know it, and admitting it is not weakness; it is the first strong thing. Alcohol makes big promises, calm, escape, ease, and then quietly starts collecting. You are not a bad person for being caught. You are a person in pain who found something that worked until it didn't. There is a way up out of this, and you do not have to climb it by sheer grit or alone. The Psalm says He brought me up out of a horrible pit, and set my feet upon a rock. That is not poetry about someone else. It can be your story.
“He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.”Psalm 40:2
“And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”1 Corinthians 6:11
“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;”Isaiah 61:1
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”Romans 8:1
Let's be honest about this
Real recovery from alcohol is usually medical as well as spiritual, and pretending otherwise can be dangerous, sudden withdrawal from heavy drinking can be a serious health risk, so please involve a doctor or a recovery program, not only prayer. God is not offended by help; He often works through it. And let us be honest about the shame cycle: you drink to numb a feeling, then feel worse for drinking, then drink again to numb that. The cycle is not proof you are hopeless. It is a trap with a door, and the door has been opened before by people exactly as stuck as you feel.
What's really going on
Underneath the bottle is almost always something the bottle is medicating: grief, anxiety, trauma, loneliness, a self you cannot stand to be sober with. Getting free is not only about removing the drink but about facing and healing what the drink was covering, and you were never meant to face it alone. This is why community is not optional in recovery; it is the mechanism. A church, a group, a sponsor, a friend who will pick up at 2am. And beneath all of it, a God who does not despise a broken and contrite heart but draws near to it. You do not have to arrive healed to come to Him. You come as you are, and the healing starts there.
Where freedom actually comes from
Jesus stood up in His hometown and read the words, He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and to set at liberty them that are bruised, and then said, today this is fulfilled. Deliverance and liberty are not metaphors to Him; they are His job description. And such were some of you, Scripture says of people once ruled by every kind of bondage, but ye are washed. He does not merely forgive the drinking; He goes after the ache that drove it. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. No condemnation. Just a hand reaching down into the pit.

Questions people ask
Can I just pray it away, or do I need a program too?
Please get both. God works through prayer and through doctors, counsellors, and recovery communities. Heavy alcohol withdrawal can be medically dangerous, so involve a professional. Needing help is not a lack of faith; it is wisdom, and God often delivers people through the hands of others.
I have relapsed so many times. Is it too late?
It is not too late. Scripture says a just person falls and rises again. Relapse is part of many recovery stories, not the end of them. Each return to God and to help is a real step, not a reset to zero. The father in Jesus' story kept the door open and ran when his son appeared on the road.
Where does a church fit in recovery?
A healthy church can be some of the truest community you find: people who will pray with you, sit with you, and not flinch at your worst. You do not need to be sober or sorted to walk in. If you would like, you can find a church near you and simply come as you are.
