How to Quit Smoking or Vaping With God's Help
Wanting to quit is a good and honest desire, and God is not indifferent to your body or your struggle. Nicotine is genuinely addictive, so if you have tried and failed before, that is not a character flaw; it is chemistry plus habit, and both can be beaten with the right help and the right strength behind you. What ye are, your very body, is described in Scripture as a temple, not to shame you but to tell you how valued it is. God cares about the health of the person He made, and He is willing to help you care for it too. This is a fight you can win, and you do not have to win it on willpower alone.
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”1 Corinthians 6:19
“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”1 Corinthians 6:20
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”Philippians 4:13
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”Romans 12:1
Let's be honest about this
Let us be practical and not pretend prayer replaces strategy. Quitting nicotine usually works best with a real plan: a set quit date, support for the withdrawal, help from a doctor or a proven program, removing triggers, and people who will encourage you through the hard first weeks. God is not offended by nicotine patches or counsellors; He often provides freedom through ordinary means. And let us also refuse the shame spiral, because feeling like a failure for a relapse just makes you reach for the next one. Setbacks are part of quitting for many people. Getting back up is the skill that matters.
What's really going on
Habits like smoking and vaping usually attach themselves to moments, stress, boredom, a break, a feeling, so quitting is partly about breaking those associations and replacing them. What do you reach for it to do, calm down, take a pause, feel less? Name that need and find a better answer for it, because an unmet need left unaddressed is how people relapse. And bring the deeper restlessness to God, who offers a peace that does not need to be inhaled. Present your body, Scripture says, as a living sacrifice; that is not a burden but a dignity, treating your one body as something worth caring for because its Maker does.
Where freedom actually comes from
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me, wrote a man who had learned it in real hardship, not in comfort. That strength is not a slogan to repeat at yourself; it is a Person to lean into when the craving hits and your own resolve is thin. Jesus meets you in the weakness, not only at the finish line. Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, Scripture asks, for ye are bought with a price. You are valued, spirit and body, by the One who paid that price. Caring for your body is not vanity; it is honoring the God who made and redeemed it.

Questions people ask
Is smoking or vaping a sin?
The Bible does not name it, but it calls us to treat our bodies as valued and God-given rather than to harm them, and to be mastered by nothing. More useful than the label is the truth that God cares about your health and is willing to help you pursue it. Approach it as caring for a gift, not as escaping condemnation.
I have relapsed with nicotine so many times. Why bother?
Because most people who finally quit did so after several attempts, not on the first try. Each attempt teaches you something about your triggers. A relapse is a setback, not a sentence. Get back up, adjust the plan, and lean on God and your support again. Persistence wins this one.
Does God really care about something as ordinary as smoking?
Yes. The God who counts the hairs of your head is not too grand to care about your lungs, your struggle, and your longing to be free of something that has hold of you. He cares about the whole of you, body and soul, and He is glad to help you steward the body He gave.
