I Feel Invisible
To feel invisible is to move through a day full of people and sense that not one of them really sees you, that you could vanish and the water would close over the space without a ripple. It is a particular and lonely kind of pain, and if it is yours, please hear the oldest name a hurting person ever gave God. A woman named Hagar, used up and run off into the desert, alone and pregnant and overlooked by everyone, met God there and said, Thou God seest me. She was the first person in the Bible to name God, and the name she gave Him was the God who sees. You are not invisible to Him.

You are not the only one who feels this
Feeling invisible often grows in the gap between how unseen you feel and how much you long to be noticed and to matter. Sometimes it comes from real neglect, being overlooked at home, at work, in a crowd. Sometimes the very ache makes us withdraw, which makes us less seen, which deepens the ache. It is a hard loop. What's really going on underneath
Here is what is actually true underneath the feeling: being seen by other people, though it matters and God made you for it, was never meant to be the foundation of your worth, because human attention is fickle and thin. There is a seeing that goes deeper, a God who has searched you and known you, who sees not the version you perform but the real you, and does not look away. When that becomes real to you, it does not make human connection unnecessary; it makes it possible, because you can stop desperately auditioning to be noticed and start letting yourself be known, out of a security that does not depend on the room.
The God who sees you
O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me, the Psalm begins, and it means known all the way down, the words before you speak them, the path you walk, the nights you feel unseen. This is the God Jesus made visible. He noticed the ones nobody noticed, the woman in the crowd, the tax man in the tree, the beggar by the road. He sees you the same way, completely and without flinching, and He calls you His own. You are not invisible. You are seen by the One whose seeing actually settles the question of whether you matter, and to Him you matter beyond measure.

Why do I feel invisible even to the people closest to me?
Often because being physically near someone is not the same as being known by them, and the parts of us that most long to be seen are the parts we hide. It can help to let one trusted person see something real, and to remember that God already sees all of you and does not look away. You are not actually invisible, even when you feel it.
I sometimes feel like no one would notice if I disappeared. What should I do?

Does God really see me, personally?
Yes. The first person in the Bible to give God a name was an overlooked, desperate woman who called Him Thou God seest me (Genesis 16:13). The whole of Psalm 139 is one person marveling that God has searched and known him completely. You are not a face in a crowd to God. He sees you personally, right now.
