When
When You Can't Sleep
If you are awake in the dark with your mind circling the same worries, you are not alone and nothing is wrong with you. The night simply strips away the noise that kept the fear at bay all day. You do not have to fix everything before morning. For a few minutes you can set it down, breathe slowly, and let a quiet, ancient prayer hold the watch so you do not have to.
What you may be feeling
Maybe your body is tired but your mind will not stop. Maybe you are replaying a conversation, or dreading tomorrow, or just aware of how quiet and large the dark is. The 3am mind tells convincing lies: that the worry is bigger than it is, that you are more alone than you are. None of that is a moral failure. It is just the hour talking.
A word for the dark
For thousands of years people have prayed themselves to sleep with lines like these. You do not have to believe them perfectly to let them slow your breathing.
There is comfort in that last line. Someone is awake so that you do not have to be. And Jesus, who himself slept through a storm because he trusted his Father, offers the tired a rest that is deeper than sleep.
Try this: breathe in slowly for four counts, out for six. As you breathe out, hand one worry over. You are not solving it tonight. You are just letting it be held by Someone stronger while you rest.
A prayer you can borrow
There is no rush
You do not have to decide anything tonight. You can read a few lines, close the page, and come back tomorrow, or never. Nobody here is keeping score, and you owe no one an answer. When you are ready, and only then, the gentlest place to meet Jesus is in his own words, watching how he treats the tired, the ashamed, and the ones everybody else gave up on.

Frequently asked questions

- Scripture treats sleeplessness gently, not as sin. Psalm 4:8 offers peace to lie down in, and Psalm 121 says God 'shall neither slumber nor sleep', keeping watch so you can rest. Jesus invites the weary to come to him for rest (Matthew 11:28).
- What can I pray when I can't sleep?
- A short honest prayer is enough: name the worry, hand it to God, and ask for rest. You can also slow your breathing and repeat one calming verse, like 'I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep' (Psalm 4:8).
