Noah

In a generation the Bible calls filled with violence, Noah was a just man who walked with God and found grace in the eyes of the LORD. God told him to build an enormous ark to save his family and the animals from a coming flood, and Noah did all that God commanded, though the rain was unheard of and the project took many years. When the waters came, the ark carried them through the judgment, and afterward God set the rainbow in the sky as a promise never again to destroy the earth so. Noah was not flawless; after the flood he grew drunk, a reminder that even the rescued remain human.

Scripture says first that Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD, and then describes him as righteous. Grace came first. His obedience was the response of a man already favored by God, not the price he paid for the ark.

That God provides one appointed way of rescue and shuts His people safely inside it. Everyone in the ark was saved, and everyone was saved the same way: by being in it. Peter reads the ark as a picture of salvation in Christ, the refuge God Himself provides.
