Nehemiah

Their story, honestly
Nehemiah was a Jewish cupbearer to the Persian king when he heard that Jerusalem's walls lay in ruins and its people in disgrace. He wept, fasted, and prayed for days, then asked the king for permission and provisions to go and rebuild. Arriving in Jerusalem, he inspected the walls by night, rallied the people, and organized the whole city to build together. Enemies mocked, threatened, and schemed to stop them, but Nehemiah answered, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down, and he set the people to work with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other. The wall was finished in fifty-two days, and he led the people in renewing their covenant with God.

First, Nehemiah teaches that grief over what is broken should drive us to prayer before action; he wept and prayed for days before he ever picked up a plan. Second, he teaches the marriage of prayer and work; he prayed constantly and also posted guards and made plans, trusting God without neglecting responsibility. Third, he teaches perseverance against opposition; mockery and threats did not pull him off the wall, because he knew the work was God's. Nehemiah rebuilt broken walls and restored a ruined people, a picture of the God who makes all things new. Where Nehemiah restored an earthly city, Christ is building the new Jerusalem, and He Himself is the cornerstone.
