What Does ‘Vine’ Mean in the Bible?

The vine is Jesus' picture of the life-giving union between Himself and His followers: apart from Him we can do nothing, but joined to Him we bear fruit.

A vine and its branches share one life. The branch does not produce fruit by straining; it simply stays connected to the vine and the life flows through. Jesus used this image to describe the relationship between Himself and those who follow Him.

The point is dependence, not effort. A branch cut off from the vine withers, but a branch that abides, that remains connected, bears much fruit. Growth in the Christian life comes not from self-powered striving but from staying close to Christ.
