In a world of shepherds, this image spoke instantly. A good shepherd leads his sheep to food and water, guards them from danger, searches for the ones that wander, and knows each by name. The Bible uses it to describe how God cares for His people.
The beloved twenty-third Psalm opens with it: the LORD is my shepherd. The picture is of a God who does not drive His people from behind but goes before them, who provides, who walks with them even through the darkest valley.
