A dedication is a family's promise to raise a child to know and love the Lord, and a plea for God's blessing over a new little life. These verses are for a baby dedication, to celebrate the gift and to entrust this child to the God who gave them.
What God says over a baby dedication
“For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.”
Children are a heritage of the Lord, a reward from Him.
“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
Train up a child in the way they should go, and they will keep it.
“But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.”
Jesus took the children up in His arms and blessed them.
“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”
There is no greater joy than to see them walk in truth.
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Like Hannah, who lent her son to the Lord, you give this child back to the God who gave them. Jesus took children in His arms and blessed them; He welcomes yours too. You cannot make your child believe, but you can point them to Christ from their earliest days, pray them toward Him, and trust the God who loves them even more than you do.
Lord, thank You for this precious child. We give them back to You, the One who gave them. Help us raise them to know and love You. Watch over their life, draw their heart to Yours, and let them walk with You all their days. Bless and keep them. In Jesus name, amen.
You were never meant to walk this alone
The family here will pray with you, and you can hear how Christ has met others in the same place.
1 Samuel 1:27-28 (Hannah lending her son to the Lord), Psalm 127:3, and Mark 10:14-16 (Jesus blessing the children) are ideal for a baby dedication.
What is a baby dedication?
It is a family's public commitment to raise a child to know God and a prayer for His blessing, following examples like Hannah dedicating Samuel (1 Samuel 1) and Jesus blessing children (Mark 10:16).
