The New Birth
To enter God's kingdom we need more than improvement; we need life we cannot generate. Jesus told Nicodemus that flesh gives birth only to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. The new birth is God breathing new life into a soul that was dead, making us His children by a power entirely from above.

What the Spirit does
In His night conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus insisted that no one sees the kingdom without being born again, born of water and of the Spirit. This second birth is not reform, education, or resolve; it is a creation, a raising of the spiritually dead into life. What is born of flesh remains flesh, unable to please God or perceive His kingdom, but what the Spirit births is genuinely new. He gives a new heart with new desires, a new capacity to trust and love God, and a living relationship where there was only distance. Like the wind, this work is real yet mysterious, sovereign and free. We do not manufacture it; we receive it. The whole Christian life begins here, as a gift.
How to walk in it
You cannot birth yourself, so begin by receiving rather than striving. Come to Christ empty, asking God for the life only His Spirit can give, and trust the promise that whoever believes is born of Him. If you are already His, live from this new nature instead of your old one. Feed the new life daily on Scripture, prayer, and fellowship, the way a newborn feeds on milk. When old patterns pull at you, remember who you now are, a child of God, and reckon the old self dead. Do not measure your standing by feelings but by God's word. Give thanks often that your life is His work, and let gratitude fuel your obedience.
The Spirit points to Christ
The new birth is always joined to Christ, for the Spirit gives us the very life that is in the risen Son. We are born again not into a philosophy but into union with Jesus, sharing His resurrection life. The Spirit's aim is to make Christ our life, so that the character, affections, and obedience of Jesus begin to take shape in us. He implants a nature that instinctively turns toward the Savior, believing, loving, and following Him. Every mark of the new birth, faith in Christ, love for His people, hunger for holiness, points back to the Son. So the Spirit does not draw attention to Himself; He raises us into Christ and then grows Christ within us until we bear the family likeness.

What does it mean to be born again?
To be born again means God gives you entirely new spiritual life by His Spirit. It is not turning over a new leaf or becoming religious but being made alive from spiritual death, receiving a new heart that trusts and loves God. Jesus said this second birth is necessary to see God's kingdom, and it is His work in us, not ours.
Can I make myself born again?
No. Just as you had no part in your first birth, you cannot produce the second. The new birth is God's sovereign gift through the Spirit, like the wind that blows where it wills. Yet you are called to come to Christ in faith and ask, trusting that everyone who believes in Him has been born of God.
