Interceding for Us
In our weakness we often do not know how to pray, but we are not left helpless. Paul says the Spirit helps us and Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Even when we can only sigh, the Spirit carries our prayers to the Father in perfect accord with His will, praying within us when we cannot pray for ourselves.

What the Spirit does
Paul admits a tender reality: we do not always know what we ought to pray. In such weakness the Spirit comes alongside to help, and more than that, He Himself intercedes for us with groanings that words cannot express. This means our prayer life does not depend finally on our eloquence or clarity. When we are confused, grieving, or too weary to form sentences, the indwelling Spirit is praying within us, giving voice to longings we cannot articulate. And because He is God, He intercedes according to the Father's will, so these prayers are never misguided. Paul assures us the Father, who searches hearts, understands the mind of the Spirit perfectly. Our stumbling prayers are thus taken up, purified, and made effective by God Himself, so that weakness becomes an occasion for grace.
How to walk in it
Let your weakness drive you to pray rather than away from prayer. When you do not know what to ask, come anyway, honestly telling God you are lost for words, and trust the Spirit to intercede within you. Do not despise groaning, sighing, or tears; they may be the Spirit's own prayer rising through you. Pray in step with Him by soaking in Scripture, which shapes your desires toward God's will. Be still often enough to sense His promptings, and follow them into prayer for others and yourself. When words fail entirely, rest in the assurance that your prayers are not wasted but carried by the Spirit to a Father who understands. Weakness is not a disqualification; it is the very place He loves to help.
The Spirit points to Christ
The Spirit's intercession works in harmony with the intercession of Christ. Paul moves in the same passage from the Spirit praying within us to the risen Jesus praying for us at God's right hand. Together they secure us: the Son pleads His finished work above, and the Spirit prays His will into and through us below. So this ministry assures us we are held on every side by God Himself. The Spirit also uses our praying to form Christ in us, teaching us to want what Jesus wants and to lean wholly on the Father as He did. As He gives voice to our deepest longings, He aligns our hearts with the Son's, so that even our weakest prayers become a means of growing into His likeness and trust.
