Giving Gifts
The Spirit not only shapes our character; He equips us to serve. Paul teaches that the same Spirit distributes gifts to each believer just as He wills. These are not badges of merit but tools of love, given to build up the body of Christ. Every believer is gifted, and the Giver decides who receives what, for the good of all.
“But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.”1 Corinthians 12:11
What the Spirit does
Paul describes a variety of gifts, ministries, and workings, then insists they all come from one and the same Spirit, who distributes them to each person individually as He wills. Several truths follow. First, the gifts are given, not earned or self-chosen; the Spirit sovereignly decides. Second, every believer receives some gift, so no one is useless in the body. Third, the purpose is not personal display but the common good, building others up in love. The gifts differ widely, from teaching and serving to encouragement, mercy, and more, yet they share one source and one aim. Because the Spirit assigns them as He wills, comparison and pride are out of place. Our task is not to envy another's gift but to discover and faithfully use what He has entrusted to us.
How to walk in it
Begin by believing you are gifted, since the Spirit gives to each believer. Ask Him to show you how He has equipped you, and pay attention to where love, need, and your abilities meet. Discover your gifts less by testing and more by serving; step into the needs around you and notice what bears fruit and stirs joy. Use whatever you receive for others, not to be seen, remembering the goal is to build up the body. Resist both pride, which forgets the gift was given, and envy, which despises your own portion. Steward your gift faithfully, developing it with diligence, and hold it with open hands under the Spirit's direction. As you serve, you honor the Giver more than the gift.
The Spirit points to Christ
The Spirit gives gifts to make the body of Christ whole and to display Christ through His people. Paul frames the gifts within the image of one body with many members, and that body is Christ's. So the Spirit distributes varied gifts to knit us together in mutual love, the way a body serves its head. Every gift, rightly used, serves the purposes of Jesus and puts His care into visible action through us. The Spirit also guards us from pride by rooting the gifts in grace, teaching us to serve as Christ served, not to be great but to give. As each member uses its gift in love, Christ becomes more fully expressed in His church, and the whole body grows up into Him.
