Assurance of Adoption
Many believers wrestle with whether they truly belong to God. Paul offers a deep comfort: the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. Beyond argument or feeling, the Spirit gives an inner assurance of our adoption, so we can call God our Father and rest in a belonging He confirms from within.

What the Spirit does
Just before this verse Paul says we have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry Abba, Father. Then he adds that the Spirit bears witness together with our spirit that we are God's children. This is the Spirit's ministry of assurance. He does not merely inform us of a doctrine; He grants an inner, God-given confidence that we truly belong to the Father, that our adoption is real. This witness rises in the heart as a settled sense of being loved and owned by God, often drawing from us the intimate cry of Abba. It is not the same as fluctuating emotion, nor does it rest on our performance. Rather, alongside the evidences of new life, the Spirit personally testifies within, quieting fear and confirming that we are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.
How to walk in it
If you long for assurance, seek it where the Spirit gives it, not in restless self-examination alone. Come to God simply as a child, using the name Father, and let that address itself be an act of trust. Ask the Spirit to bear witness within you, and pay attention when He warms your heart toward God. Root your confidence in God's promises rather than shifting feelings, yet do not despise the quiet sense of belonging He grants. Watch, too, for the fruits that accompany His witness, love for God's people and a pull toward holiness. When doubt returns, preach the gospel to yourself and pray for the Spirit's confirming touch. Assurance is His gift to receive, not merely a conclusion to reason your way toward.
The Spirit points to Christ
The Spirit assures us of adoption by uniting us to the Son and reproducing His relationship with the Father in us. Paul says we are joint heirs with Christ, and the very cry Abba that the Spirit prompts was first the cry of Jesus in Gethsemane. So the Spirit teaches us to relate to God as the Son does, in trust, love, and confident nearness. Our assurance is not that we are impressive but that we are in Christ, sharing His sonship and His inheritance. The same Spirit who confirms our belonging also forms in us the childlike heart of Jesus, dependent and unafraid. As we grow, He deepens both our certainty of the Father's love and our resemblance to the Son who revealed it.
