Fire is one of the ways God draws near without being tamed. It guards the gate of Eden. It burns in a bush without consuming it. It leads a people through the dark as a pillar of flame, and wraps a mountain until it cannot be touched. It falls on a soaked altar to answer a prophet's prayer, and it walks beside three young men in a furnace as a fourth figure like the Son of God. It purifies like a refiner, cleanses a prophet's lips with a single coal, and finally rests on the heads of the first believers as tongues of flame.
