Peter's Vision of the Sheet
Praying on a rooftop and hungry, Peter fell into a trance and saw heaven opened and a great sheet let down full of all kinds of animals, with a voice telling him to kill and eat. Three times he refused, and three times the voice answered. This is a true guiding vision that opened the gospel to the Gentiles.

The dream or vision
Peter saw heaven opened and a vessel like a great sheet knit at the four corners descending to the earth. In it were all manner of four footed beasts, wild animals, creeping things, and birds, including creatures the law called unclean. A voice said, Rise, Peter, kill and eat. Peter objected that he had never eaten anything common or unclean. The voice replied that what God had cleansed he must not call common. This happened three times, and then the vessel was received up again into heaven. While Peter pondered what it meant, messengers from the Gentile centurion Cornelius arrived, and the Spirit told him to go with them without doubting.
What it meant
The vision was not finally about food but about people. Peter himself concluded that God had shown him he should not call any man common or unclean, and that God is no respecter of persons but accepts those of every nation who fear Him. Going to Cornelius' house, Peter preached, and the Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles as on the Jews at Pentecost, and they were baptized. What came of it was the opening of the church's door to the nations, a turning point that Peter later defended before the Jerusalem believers, establishing that the gospel is for all peoples, not the Jews alone.
How it points to Christ
The vision unfolds the reach of Christ's saving work. Jesus had commissioned His disciples to make disciples of all nations, and here the risen Lord, by His Spirit, tears down the wall between Jew and Gentile that had stood for ages. What God cleansed no one may call common, and it is the blood of Christ that cleanses.
