Jacob's Ladder
Fleeing his brother with nothing but a stone for a pillow, Jacob lay down at Bethel and dreamed. A stairway rose from earth to heaven, angels ascending and descending upon it, and God stood above it and spoke. This is a true revelatory vision, given to a fugitive who least deserved it, opening heaven over an ordinary patch of ground.

The dream or vision
Jacob saw a ladder, or stairway, set on the earth with its top reaching into heaven, and the angels of God going up and down upon it. Above it stood the Lord, who named Himself the God of Abraham and Isaac, and renewed to Jacob the covenant promise of land, of descendants as the dust of the earth, and of blessing for all families through his seed. God pledged His presence and His keeping until the promise was done. Jacob woke afraid, saying that surely the Lord was in that place and he had not known it. He called it the house of God and the gate of heaven, and set up his stone pillar as a memorial.
What it meant
The dream told a running man that God had not left him. Though Jacob had schemed and now fled, the covenant given to Abraham rested on him, unearned. Heaven was not shut but open, with traffic of angels between God and this fugitive. What came of it was a turned life: Jacob vowed the Lord as his God, and Bethel became a landmark of grace he returned to. The vision established that God keeps His word to the undeserving, carrying the promise forward through Jacob toward the nation and the blessing meant for all peoples.
How it points to Christ
Jesus took this vision on His own lips. He told Nathanael that he would see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. Jesus was saying that He Himself is the ladder, the true meeting place of heaven and earth, the gate of God. What Jacob saw as a stairway of stone and light finds its fulfillment in a Person. Through Christ the traffic between God and sinners is opened, and the house of God is no longer a place but a Man in whom God and humanity are joined. Bethel pointed forward to Bethlehem and beyond.
