Paul's Macedonian Call
Blocked by the Spirit from preaching in Asia and Bithynia, Paul and his companions came to Troas. There in the night Paul saw a vision: a man of Macedonia standing and pleading with him to come over and help them. They set sail at once. This true guiding vision turned the Christian mission toward Europe.

During the night at Troas a vision appeared to Paul. A man of Macedonia stood and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. The vision was brief and specific, a single figure with a single plea from across the sea. Luke, who joins the narrative here with the word we, records that immediately after Paul had seen the vision, they sought to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called them to preach the gospel there. They loosed from Troas, sailed to Samothracia and Neapolis, and came to Philippi, the leading city of that part of Macedonia, where the first European converts would soon be made.

The vision resolved a season of closed doors into a clear direction. The Spirit had forbidden Asia and Bithynia, and now He positively summoned them westward to a new continent. The team read it as the Lord's call and obeyed at once. What came of it was momentous: at Philippi, Lydia believed and a jailer's household was saved, and the gospel took root in Europe, spreading through Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, and Corinth. A single night vision redirected the mission of the church and shaped the path by which the good news would eventually reach much of the western world.

The vision advances the commission of Christ to carry His name to the ends of the earth. The pleading Macedonian embodies the cry of every people in darkness for the help only Christ can give.
