A real question, answered honestly
Can I Talk to the Dead?
The wish to talk to someone you have lost is one of the most human aches there is, but the Bible warns lovingly against seeking the dead through mediums, and points the grieving elsewhere. Should not a people seek unto their God, it asks, rather than to the dead on behalf of the living. There is a better answer to grief than a seance: a God who holds both you and the one you miss, and who offers a real reunion, not a whispered echo.
“And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?”Isaiah 8:19
“Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.”Deuteronomy 18:11
“And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”Luke 16:31
Let's take the appeal seriously
If you have lost someone, please know this ache is not weakness; it is love with nowhere to go. Of course you would give anything for one more word. That longing is holy, and any honest answer has to begin by honoring it rather than scolding it. The desire to reach across death is a witness that we were not made for goodbye, and that death is an intruder, not the way things are supposed to be.
What is really being offered
But mediums and spiritism cannot safely give you what you long for; the Bible treats them as a door you should not open, precisely because it cares about you. Contacting the dead, even when it seems to comfort, leaves you dependent on voices you cannot verify and turns you away from the God who alone holds your beloved. Grief is real and long, and it deserves better than the counterfeit closure a medium offers. It deserves true hope.
Where the longing points
Jesus wept at a friend's grave before he raised him, so he does not despise your tears; he shares them. And because he rose, he can promise that death is not the last word for those who trust him. The reunion you long for is not found by summoning the dead, but by belonging to the One who conquered death and keeps everyone who is his. In him, goodbye is not forever. You can bring your grief to him tonight, exactly as it is.
Questions people ask
Why does the Bible forbid contacting the dead if it might comfort me?
Precisely because it loves you. Scripture treats mediums and spiritism as spiritually dangerous and points the grieving to God instead. The comfort a medium offers is uncertain and borrowed; the comfort God offers is sure, and it comes with the promise of real reunion.
Where can I take my grief instead?
To God, honestly and out loud, and to his people, who are meant to grieve alongside you. Jesus, who wept at a grave and then conquered death, meets the grieving with both tears and hope. You are welcome to ask his family to pray with you by name.
