Your pain is real
Spiritual abuse
Spiritual abuse is real, and giving it a name is not bitterness or exaggeration. When someone uses God, the Bible, or their spiritual authority to control, frighten, shame, or exploit you, that is abuse, no matter how holy it looked. What happened to you was wrong.
What is true
Scripture is unsparing about leaders who abuse the flock. It calls them false shepherds who feed themselves and scatter the sheep. Jesus warned that some would come in God's name to devour. Naming spiritual abuse is not attacking God. It is refusing to let his name keep being used as a weapon. God is not the one who trapped you. He is the one who wants you free, and safe, and whole.
What Jesus said, and did
One small step
Your one small step: trust the part of you that knows something was wrong. You were taught to override that voice. Begin, gently, to listen to it again, ideally with a safe person alongside you.

Honest questions
- What is spiritual abuse?
- It is the misuse of spiritual authority, Scripture, or the name of God to control, manipulate, shame, silence, or exploit someone. It can happen in any group, however respectable it appears.
- Is it a sin to call it abuse?
- No. Naming harm truthfully is not gossip or rebellion. Scripture itself condemns leaders who abuse their flock. Telling the truth about what happened is part of healing.
- What should I do if I am still in it?
- Your safety comes first. Reach out to trusted people outside the group, and to professionals or authorities if there is any danger or crime. Leaving an abusive system is not leaving God.
There is no rush
You do not have to decide anything today. You can read a little, close the page, and come back tomorrow, or never. Nobody here is keeping score, and you owe no one an answer. When you are ready, and only then, the gentlest place to meet Jesus is in his own words, watching how he treats the tired, the ashamed, and the ones everybody else gave up on.
