I Am With You Always
Matthew ends with the Great Commission. The risen Jesus sends His disciples to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching, and closes with a promise: He is with them always, even to the end of the age. The pledge of His abiding presence is attached to the mission and reaches to the very end of history.

What the promise is
The promise is the final word of Matthew's Gospel, which opened by naming Jesus Immanuel, God with us; now the risen Christ personally guarantees that presence to the end. It is given to disciples sent on a daunting task, to reach all nations, and it assures them they never go alone. Always, literally all the days, covers ordinary and hard days alike, and the end of the age means until history is consummated at His return. This is not a vague sentiment but the presence of the One who holds all authority in heaven and earth, just declared in the previous verse. So the promise fuels obedience: because He is present and sovereign, the mission cannot ultimately fail. It is His accompanying presence with His sent people, an unbroken with-ness stretching to the last day.
How to hold it honestly
This promise is bound to the commission; it is Christ's presence with His people as they follow and obey Him, not a generic comfort blanket detached from His mission. It does not guarantee that you will feel His nearness at every moment; many faithful disciples have walked through darkness sensing nothing. Nor does it promise that the mission will be easy or that you will be spared opposition; the disciples it was first spoken to were sent into a hostile world and most died for it. Read honestly, it is presence in the task, not exemption from cost. And the comfort is vast: the sovereign, risen Lord, who holds all authority, has pledged to be with His people every single day until the end.
How it is Yes and Amen in Christ
This is one of those promises where Christ is Himself the gift: not something He sends, but Himself who stays. Matthew frames His whole story as Immanuel, God with us, and this closing verse seals it; by His death and resurrection the barrier that would exclude God's presence is gone. He is with us now by His Spirit, whom He pours out, and He will be with us visibly at the end He names. All authority is His, so His presence is no small comfort but the accompaniment of the reigning Lord. In Him the ancient hope of God dwelling with His people is yes and moving toward its climax, when He will dwell with us fully and forever.
Questions people ask
Is Jesus with me even when I do not feel His presence
Yes. The promise rests on His word and finished work, not on your emotions. Many faithful disciples have walked through seasons of feeling nothing while Christ remained fully present. Feelings can fade, but the risen Lord who holds all authority has pledged to be with His people all the days, and His promise does not depend on your experience of it.
Is I am with you always only for the first disciples
It was first spoken to the eleven, but it is tied to the mission that continues through the whole church age, to the end of the age. As His people keep making disciples of all nations, the same promise of His accompanying presence extends to them. It reaches, quite deliberately, to the very last day of history.
