A New Heart
In Ezekiel 36, God promises exiled and defiled Israel that He will give them a new heart and put a new spirit within them, removing the heart of stone and giving a heart of flesh. Spoken to a people undone by their own rebellion, it is a promise of inward transformation done by God for the sake of His own name.

What the promise is
The exiles had proven that outward law could not cure an inward hardness. So God pledges a work only He can do: to cleanse them, replace the unfeeling heart of stone with a responsive heart of flesh, and put His own Spirit within them so that they walk in His ways. Crucially, God says He does this not because they deserve it but for the honor of His holy name, which their sin had profaned among the nations. The new heart is not self-improvement; it is a divine transplant that produces genuine obedience from the inside. How to hold it honestly
In its first setting this is a covenant promise to the house of Israel, tied to their restoration to the land, not a private self-help slogan about feeling more loving. It should not be reduced to emotional makeovers or used to shame believers who still battle sin; the new heart begins a lifelong renewal, not instant perfection. Nor is it something we manufacture by effort; God says I will, again and again. Read honestly, it neither flatters human capacity nor withholds hope. The true and enormous comfort is that God specializes in hearts of stone: He gives what He commands, changing people from within by His Spirit, so transformation rests on His initiative rather than on our willpower.
How it is Yes and Amen in Christ
This new-covenant promise is inaugurated by Jesus, who at the Last Supper spoke of the new covenant in His blood. His death provides the cleansing Ezekiel foresaw, and His resurrection and Pentecost pour out the promised Spirit who now indwells His people. The stony heart is not merely reformed; in Christ we are born again and made new creations. What the law could not do, God did by sending His Son and His Spirit, writing His will on the heart. So the promise of a new heart is yes in Him: He is the mediator of the better covenant, and by union with Him the believer receives both the cleansing and the indwelling Spirit that make new obedience possible.

Was the new heart promise only for ancient Israel
