Tearfund

Relief & justice · Founded 1968 · Teddington, London, United Kingdom

Tearfund is a Christian relief and development charity founded in 1968 in the United Kingdom, growing out of the Evangelical Alliance's relief fund. Its mission is to follow Jesus where the need is greatest, responding to disaster, tackling poverty, and pursuing justice. It works through local churches and partners in some of the world's hardest places to see whole communities lifted out of poverty.

What they do

Tearfund responds to disasters and humanitarian crises with emergency aid, and it works long term on clean water, sanitation, food, and livelihoods in poor communities.

It champions justice by addressing the root causes of poverty, including advocacy on issues such as debt, corruption, and the effects of a changing climate on the poor.

Much of its work runs through local churches and partner organizations, equipping communities to bring lasting change from within rather than depending on outside aid.

The Scripture behind the work

“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
“Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.”
“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Where the door leads

Tearfund follows Jesus to the places of deepest need, believing the local church is a powerful agent of hope. Its relief and justice work flows from the gospel and the call to love our neighbor. You can join in by giving, praying, or taking part in its campaigns for a fairer world.
